Livestock Facts: Bovine
Imagine eating a juicy cheeseburger from your favorite burger place. Now imagine all of the people that worked hard to get all of the products to the restaurant, the vet(s) that had to help the ranchers keep the animals healthy and safe for human consumption. And lastly, picture the adorable yet feisty animals that were required for a good portion of those ingredients.
Many people think that it’s just a cow and that there is nothing “special” about them. Truth be told, each individual cattle is particular along with each breed. Breeds tend to specialize in certain aspects of cattle uses such as dairy and beef. Of course there are some overlaps and breeds that do their own thing.
Brown Swiss, Holstein, and Jersey are a couple of dairy cattle. The Holstein is the typical cattle that people think of with the white and black pattern. Interesting facts about dairy cattle include:
Milking cattle consume about 100 pounds of food and up to fifty pounds of water per day
The average dairy cattle produces up to nine pounds of milk per day.
The average dairy cattle can produce milk for up to three years (calving every season) before being released for beef production.
Simmental, Hereford, and Charolais are all beef cattle. Angus cattle, known for their muscular builds and marbled beef cuts, are the most common beef cattle breed. A couple of fun facts are listed below:
KS is the #1 state for beef processing and third for beef production out of all fifty US states.
Beef cattle have and still provide over 100 medicines practiced.
Beef cattle outnumber the human race in nine out of fifty US states.
