Livestock Facts: Galline

Throughout our childhoods people tell us about livestock animals- specifically chickens. We grow up knowing that chickens go Bok Bok, have feathers and are a type of bird. But what do most people not know about these somewhat aggressive feathered birds? It tends to be a lot that most citizens do not know.

Having worked with chickens at my high school for semesterly grades, I have learned a lot about these species. Personally, I learned that they can and will eat their own eggs during winter for extra protein and calcium, are aggressive, annoying, and need constant attention.

Through FFA, I learned that the most common types of chickens are Rhode Island Red, Plymouth Rock, and Leghorn. I also learned that there are three categories of chickens: laying, meat-producing, and dual-purpose.

Laying chickens are quite literally known for the amount of eggs they lay. One chicken can lay 20 to 23 dozen eggs before molting at fourteen months. After molting they still lay quite a load full of eggs but less than before. The most common breeds according to Nutrenaworld.com are White Leghorn, Black Sex, and Red Sex Link breeds.

Meat- producing chickens are not as interesting as laying chickens. Most meat producing chickens are factory farmed which slaughter the birds after 42 days of being alive in the factories.

Dual purpose chickens are the typical backyard chickens. Laying far less eggs than laying chickens and used for food these chickens are known for their brown eggs, reproductive-ness and overall being larger. Having the larger body allows for the easily startled birds to become flightless and great pets until the end (if you have the space).

Overall, these mostly flightless birds are delicious to the taste but are treated horribly and hold more secrets to the person. One question that people keep asking is “what came first, the chicken or the egg?”
