Livestock Facts: Caprine
Our fifth animal is the caprine meaning “of or resembling a goat” according to Dictionary.com. So yes, the fifth animal is a goat. These are important to the agricultural world as they are major producers of meat, milk, fiber, and a ton of other products.
Many people have heard and probably tried goat milk or cheese found in the dairy sections of grocery stores like Walmart, Target, Amazon, and other specialized goat/pet stores throughout the KS state. You may also try some of these dairy products at Mediterranean or Greek restaurants in the KC metro area. Goat meat is less common in America unlike the goat dairy products previously described.
Goat meat is much healthier than red meats such as beef, pork, and lamb. And unlike much of the red meats, you should not leave the centers pink or cooked quickly. The Wild Meat Company has several tips, techniques, and meals to try if interested in creating or trying goat meat at home.
Prairie View A&M’s PDF (listed below) describes many benefits and reasons to introduce and include goat meat in your diet. Some of these benefits include the facts that the meat is leaner, healthier, and has more nutrients available. Not only do they produce dairy and meat products but they are also used for personal acquaintances and uses as well.
These other uses include brush control, livestock shows, packing and lively companions (pets). Citizens everywhere can be welcomed to see the livestock shows for FFA competitions and State Fairs. I personally have been to both and even got to pet the somewhat soft and friendly animals. Just like any other animal species, not everyone is friendly, it depends on the individual, how they were raised, and what they were exposed to in their lifetime.
