Livestock Facts: Swine
When you think of swine, you probably think ‘what the heck is that?’, right? Well, you really should not after this. A swine is a classic farm animal typically hanging out in the mud, near a spider named Charlotte, etc. if you get where I’m going. If you don’t, Wilbur from Charlotte’s Web is a pig or swine. Of course, not every fact about Wilbur the majestic pig from the story is true. Below are some facts that are true about swine.
First, swine are super intelligent animals. According to website World Animal Protection, pigs are “smarter than your dog”, have “excellent memories”, and have an “excellent sense of direction”. Elaborated in small paragraphs pigs can learn their name(s) in about two weeks, can learn to play video games and are as intelligent as a human toddler. Pigs are also able to remember how to get home through long distances and remember where things are located such as their favorite grub spot or where dinner is held.
Secondly, there are many misleading sayings about pigs that parents tend to use with their kids. A couple of these sayings include “Sweating like a pig” and calling bedrooms a “pigsty” when in fact both are completely incorrect. Pigs do not sweat at all. Pigs are also very clean and will leave feeding and/or sleeping areas to relieve themselves. I found this information on the same website as above (World Animal Protection).
Third, pigs have their own “language” which includes more than 20 vocalizations. One of these vocalizations does include the famous “oink!”. According to the BC SPCA website, each of the twenty-plus vocalizations has a different message and pig-translator research is being done to help them communicate how the individual pig is feeling. This website also says that pigs are very social animals sleeping nose to nose, communicating with and playing with not only other pigs or other animals but humans as well!
